Duration: Farmshare Austin will offer two 18-week programs annually.
We are currently accepting applicants for our Fall 2017 program. The Fall 2017 program begins August 21st, and runs continuously through December 21st, 2017. Students are expected to participate 28 hours per week for a total of 18 weeks.
Students attend classroom sessions on Tuesday and Thursday. Field time is a minimum of 12 hours per week per student and can be divided up throughout the week according to students’ other commitments. Students should be prepared to make a full season commitment and participate in all activities for the duration of the program.
Number of students accepted: 8 students will be accepted into each program.
Application: Download an application here.
Application deadline: Applications for the Fall 2017 program are currently open. Deadline to apply is July 15, 2017.
Room & board: Students will be provided with on-farm housing (optional), seasonal produce, and some staple goods for use in the shared kitchen.
Tuition: Tuition for students living off of the farm is $2,500. Housing for students choosing to live on the farm is an additional $1,500. Need based scholarships are available for admitted students and residents may have the opportunity to offset resident fees through work-shares.
The farm: Students will learn and work on a seven acre diversified organic farm that sits on the fertile banks of the Colorado river about 25 minutes from downtown Austin.
Skills desired: Applicants should have a passion for local food production and organic agriculture. A prospective applicant should be prepared to make a commitment to an intensive program, and be punctual, eager, and willing to work hard. Previous farm or garden experience is preferred but not necessary. Students must be available for a minimum of eight hours of class on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, twelve hours of field experience per week, and 3 hours a week outside of regular class hours to experience the Mobile Market portion of Farmshare Austin’s Food Access initiative. Students are also expected to participate in 4-8 more hours of visits to other farms in Central Texas and workshops from members of the local food community on Wednesday afternoons and a few Monday afternoons. Candidates must demonstrate a strong desire to learn about small scale sustainable agriculture.
Additional considerations: Applicants must be able to commit to a minimum of 30 hours of combined classroom and field work per week. Students must be comfortable and capable of performing strenuous physical work, and possess good physical abilities, with the capability to work long hours of physical labor and tolerate conditions. Students also need to be able to lift up to 50 pounds repeatedly. It would greatly benefit students to have a vehicle, as they will need to provide their own transportation to and from the farm when not in class.
We’re sorry but we cannot accommodate pets at this time.
After your application is received it will be reviewed by the Education Manager who will follow up to schedule an interview and farm tour. If your application is accepted you will have a month to submit a non-refundable deposit and hold your spot in the program.
